Ibogaine Relapse Rates: What the Research Shows

A careful look at what the studies found and what they cannot tell us.

What people want to know

People ask us how often someone uses again after ibogaine care. The honest answer is that no one knows with confidence. The research is small and early. This page summarizes two published studies and explains their limits. It is general information, not medical advice.

A study of 30 people

Brown and Alper followed 30 people with opioid dependence who had ibogaine treatment. They had averaged about three earlier treatment attempts. One month after treatment, 15 of the 30 (50%) reported no opioid use in the previous 30 days. Withdrawal symptom scores dropped a few days after treatment as well.

A twelve-month study of 14 people

Noller and colleagues followed 14 people in New Zealand for 12 months after a single ibogaine treatment. Only 8 completed every interview. Among those 8, scores for drug use and for depression were significantly lower at 12 months than before treatment.

What these studies cannot tell us

Both studies were small observational studies. Neither had a comparison group, and the results rely on what participants reported. They cannot show how ibogaine compares with other treatments, and they cannot predict what will happen to any one person. We did not find a larger controlled study that settles the question.

Why support after treatment matters

Neither study tested aftercare, so we cannot say how much it changes outcomes. We think it matters because people go home to the same stress and the same triggers. If you have used again, read what to do if you slip. For the weeks and months ahead, see life after ibogaine.

Support in the months after

The Tabernanthe provides a safe, caring environment for ibogaine aftercare, and it can be at no cost to you, depending on your situation. If you were treated through one of our partners or on your own, you can reach out.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988. For a medical emergency, call 911. Aftercare does not replace medical care. For a medical concern, contact your provider or your doctor.
