Returning to Work and Family Life After Ibogaine
Going back to your job, your partner and your kids, one step at a time.
Going back to work and home
Treatment does not pause the rest of your life. Your job, your partner, your kids and your bills are all still there. People often tell us at The Tabernanthe that the return home is the hardest part. This guide offers practical ideas. It is general information, not medical or legal advice.
Plan your return
If you can, give yourself a few quiet days before work and big obligations. Follow every instruction from your provider about activity and follow-up. Decide ahead of time what you will say about where you have been, and to whom. If possible, start with a lighter load and add back slowly.
Talking with your employer
You do not have to share more than you want to. Some people simply say they were dealing with a health matter. If you need time off or changes to your schedule, ask about your workplace's leave and accommodation policies. A doctor, HR or an employment professional can explain your rights. Keep the conversation short and focused on what you need.
Talking with your partner and family
The people who love you may be hopeful, anxious or both. Some will want a lot of detail. Others may be quietly waiting for a slip. Tell them what you need, whether that is quiet, patience, help with a routine or just company. Share what you feel ready to share, and say plainly what you are not ready to discuss yet. Ask them to look after themselves too, because recovery affects the whole household.
Boundaries and routine
You may need to say no to people, places and events tied to past use. Decide ahead of time how you will leave a situation that feels unsafe. Rebuild a routine around sleep, meals, movement and a daily check-in with someone who knows. See sleep after ibogaine and the first 90 days. If you slip, read what to do.
